Art 357B and Art 357C: Sample Unit

How can we apply different drawing techniques and concepts to create a final character illustration that reflects composition and mood? This question sparked the development of a sample unit on Character Design using 2-D materials. The goal of this unit is to have students create a colored illustration of an original character in an environment with a cohesive color palette.

Unit Sheet

The unit sheet is structured to allow students to see what is expected of the project including an outline of the lessons, submission criteria, and supplies. This unit sheet can be adjusted to include learning objectives (including content-specific and ELD goals), California and overall school standards, and much more.

Sample Lessons

The following lessons highlight instructional activities, materials, and questions that may be used in teaching the lesson. The sample lessons below outline days 2 and 3 (color theory) as well as days 5 and 6 (character creation). The set up of the unit establishes foundation skills and knowledge at the beginning which then leads into content-specific learning and creation. This scaffolded structured is designed to support students at all levels and entry points. It also allows for differentiation and interventions to be established from the get-go rather than having it happen at the end of the unit.

Rubrics

The benefit of rubrics allows for easier grading over time. These rubrics are structured to follow the natural progression of the unit and assist in the implementation of assessing students’ learning.

There are many styles of rubrics, yet often the analytical rubric is used in assessing students’ demonstration of specific criteria, which applies to this sample unit.
